The St. Martin Parish Animal Services Program is the professional shelter manager of the parish facility. The goals of the Animal Services Program are to promote responsible pet ownership through education of related matters, such as the importance of vaccinations, licensing, and realistic population control; and to maintain an effective Animal Control Shelter by attempting to reunite animals with their owners, placing pets in permanent, caring homes, and providing for humane solutions to animal control.
About the Animal Services Shelter
Stray dogs and cats are held for five (5) working days. The animals are cared for daily, regardless of weekends and holidays. When the allowed time has expired, the animal becomes public property. It is then evaluated for acceptance into our adoption program based on its health, age, temperament, and available space in our adoption kennels. Animals not accepted for the adoption program are humanely euthanized.
There is no firm "adopt-by" date for dogs and cats entering our adoption program. They remain in the adoption program as long as they stay healthy and we have room.
Up to 2,000 animals are impounded annually.
